又初等的な質問ですみません。奥村先生の美文書４版のＬａＴexを使っていますが、
いつも\equationを使おうとするとエラーになってしまいます。どこが悪いのかおおしえねがいます。サンプルは以下の簡単なものです。環境はWindows ＸＰです。
\documentclass{amsart}
\begin{document}
$\frac{972}{157}$を連分数で表わすと次のようになる。
\begin{equation}
\frac{972}{157}=6+\cfrac{1}{5+\cfrac{1}{4+\cfrac{1}{3+cfrac{1}{2}}}}
\end{equation}
\end{document}
以下のようなエラーが出ます。\equationは使えないのでしょうか？
もちろん \equationでなく$$で囲めば問題ないのですが。
