<英語>
Please excuse my sorry Japanese. If perhaps I couldn't state everything clearly, please allow to repeat myself here. I need to create a document, preferably using luatex-ja, with exactly 40 characters in a line, with 36 lines per A4 sheet. Is there a way to enforce these dimensions in luatex-ja regardless of the font size (here: 10pt)?

Thank you very much in advance.

You have to use luatex-ja anyway? Otherwise, you can apply Prof. Abe's solution
to your case with conventional platex.

by clicking the word "文字数、行数の指定", you can get his example file "mojisuu.tex".

Thank you very much, I could apply the technique demonstrated in the example you pointed me to.

However, the reason I prefer using luatex(-ja) is that with platex, I cannot get access to \bfseries fonts, neither in \gtfamily nor \mcfamily, and the sparse documentation for platex doesn't make things easier.

I'm currently trying to use the otf package with its 'deluxe' option as demonstrated here: http://ajt.ktug.org/2008/0201okumura.pdf (Table 3 & section 3.2).

I have now:

\documentclass[10pt,a4paper]{jarticle}
\usepackage[deluxe]{otf}
\begin{document}
% doesn't yield bold text
\bfseries\mcfamily その内訳は
\end{document}

compiling effectively with: platex file; dvipdfmx file to a PDF

Looking at otf.sty http://mirrors.ctan.org/language/japanese/japanese-otf/sty/otf.sty, I noticed that the deluxe option maps the relevant font shapes to the expminb, rubyminb-h, rubymin-v etc fonts. My TeXLive2013 includes all the otm,tfm,vf,map etc. files I need except for the actual fonts, which according to http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/CTAN/language/japanese/japanese-otf/readme.txt are in a Adobe Acrobat font pack (self-extracting archive as a Windows executable) or what not, and I'm on Linux. The generated PDF references the (correct bold) font "Ryumin-Light,Bold-Identity-H", which is not embedded and not available on my system.

Unfortunately, the bold (mincho) fonts are also an external requirement I have no control over. Are there adequate fonts I can use with platex for both bold and non-bold mincho fonts, or someplace else I can get the ryumin font from?

Hi

your problem is with the setup of fonts for the embedding with dvipdfmx. If you are using TeX Live, please take a look at http://www.tug.org/texlive/updmap-kanji.html which should help.

The free IPA and IPAex fonts don't provide bold variants. If you are running MacOSX you will have the Kozuka family installed, you have to make the fonts available to dvipdfmx by copying them into the TEXMFLOCAL tree (that is what I did) and select kozuka for the embedding option.

Hope that helps
