pLatexとLatex

日本語でLatexが使えません。
具体的には

\documentclass{jsarticle}
\begin{document}

おはよう


\end{document

と打ってコンパイルしても

!Latex Error: This file needs format 'pLatex2e'
              but this is 'Latex2e'

と出ます。
{jsarticle}→{article}
おはよう→Hello

とするとうまくいき、dvioutで表示することもできます。

どうしてなんでしょうか？
