amsart環境で\mathcal{Y}か{\mathcal Y}？

ご無沙汰しております。今年もよろしくお願いします。

基本的なことで躓きました。おしえてください：
私はMacユーザ（MacOSX+ptex package 2005版）で
Windowsユーザ（windows98でかなり古いTeX)さん
と共同研究しているんですが、

そのWindowsユーザさんは

\documentclass{amsart}
\begin{document}

$\hat\mathcal{Y}$

\end{document}
-------
でエラーがでないのですが、
Macユーザの私は以下のようなエラーがでます：

l.4 $\hat\mathcal
                 {Y}$
I've run across a `}' that doesn't seem to match anything.

$\hat\mathcal{Y}_t$
を
$\hat{\mathcal Y}_t$
とすればこのエラーは消えます。これはどちらの文法が正しいのでしょうか？


ちなみに

\documentclassが
{amsart}
でなく
{article}
ならば
$\hat\mathcal{Y}$
でも
$\hat{\mathcal Y}$
でもエラーはでません。
