単に \twocolumn のオプション引数に tabular 環境を入れただけでは
再現しません。こちらでは次のソースがエラーなくタイプセットできました。

    \documentclass{article}\relax
    \begin{document}
    \twocolumn[%
        \begin{tabular}{|c|c|}
            a   &   b   \\
            d   &   d
        \end{tabular}%
    ]

    So saying, he stopped his horse and let the reins fall on its neck:

\twocolumn のオプション引数内（tabular 環境のオプション引数とか）で右ブラケット（]）を
使ったりしていませんか？　そのようにすると、その右ブラケットが \twocolumn の
オプション引数の終わりと認識されて、エラーになると思います。その場合、tabular 環境全体を
ブレース（{〜}）で囲むと回避できるはずです。
