マクロの中で文字間隔が調整されない

無謀にも投稿論文のカバー作成のスタイルを書いています。
字詰めでうまくいかないので、相談させてください。

\def\text#1{\def\textnum{#1}}
\def\figure#1{\def\figurenum{#1}}
\def\table#1{\def\tablenum{#1}}
\def\note{%
This manuscript involves \textnum  pages of text
 \ifnum\figurenum>0{\ifnum\figurenum=1{and one figure}
   \else{and \figurenum figures }\fi}\fi
 \ifnum\tablenum>0{\ifnum\tablenum=1{and one table}
   \else{and \tablenum tables }\fi}\fi.
}
\begin{document}
\text{3}
\figure{2}
\table{0}
\note
\end{document}
上記の例を実行すると数字のあとのスペースがなくなり、また文末と文末のピリオドの
間が空いてしまいます。無理矢理\hspace{}などで調整するしかないのでしょうか。
