tabular 環境で column を繰り返し埋めるには?

tabular 環境で column をループで埋めようとしたのですが、うまくいきません。

\newcounter{counteri}
\def\test{%
  \setcounter{counteri}{0}%
  \@whilenum\value{counteri}<42\do{%
    \stepcounter{counteri}%
    hoge &}}

と \test を定義して

\begin{tabular}{|lllllll … lll}
 \test
\end{tabular}

としてみたのですが、
! Incomplete \ifnum; all text was ignored after line 159.

                \fi
l.159      \test
                 \\
?
となってしまいました。

何か解決法はないでしょうか。それともマクロ内では catcode 4 は禁句なのでしょうか。
% 素直に Perl とかで TeX ソースを出すのがいいのかもしれませんが。
