\textsc について

\textsc を使用するとエラーが生じてしまいます。

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\textsc{Small Caps}
\end{document}

出力はできるので，特に問題はないのですが，理由がよくわかりません。
多分あるフォントがないので，別なもので代替しているとは思うのですが。
ただ，日本語を用いていないので mc の出る理由がわからないのです。
御教授お願いします。
